AUGUST 3, 2025 — In a colourful display of community pride and creativity, all 138 designs submitted for a new city flag are now on exhibit at City Hall of Vancouver, Washington, as seen in a video published by the City.
The entries reflect a cross-section of artistic talent: 107 submissions hailed from Vancouver residents; the rest arrived from other Washington cities, Oregon, around the U.S., and as far away as overseas. Youth made a notable mark, with 11 submissions created by designers age 18 or younger.
City officials launched the open competition earlier this year, seeking a fresh emblem to better represent Vancouver’s diverse and growing population.
The city’s current flag, adopted in 1993, had little public input and struggled for recognition among locals.
“The community and the city have undergone tremendous change and growth since that flag was adopted 32 years ago,” said Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle when announcing the contest.
“If our flag is to symbolize our community, it should represent our shared values, aspirations, and pride for what makes Vancouver special
A flag design committee, made up of residents and city councilmembers, will select 10 finalists from the submissions.
Later this summer, Vancouverites will get a chance to vote and comment on these finalists via an online poll. The contest winner will be honoured in city communications, at a flag-raising ceremony, receive the Key to the City, and be awarded a new city flag.
Residents are invited to visit City Hall throughout the summer to view the flags.
