AUGUST 13, 2025 — Villa María in Argentina has officially chosen its new city flag, according to the Región Objetivo.
The winning design, submitted by local resident Lucio Bizzarri, was selected by both a panel of judges and the community through a public vote out of 28 submissions. The announcement was made in the White Hall of City Hall, led by Mayor Eduardo Accastello and members of the jury.
The initiative was part of the “Villa María Becomes a Flag” program.
The winning flag will be formally presented to all institutions and the community on August 20, marking the 110th anniversary of Villa María’s designation as a city.
During the ceremony, Mayor Accastello described the moment as historic. Daniel del Bono, representing the Córdoba Culture Agency, celebrated the occasion as a vital expression of local identity. Provincial legislator Alfredo Nigro highlighted that the flag embodies the city’s existing identity, referencing its river, fields, the sun motif painted by artist Fernando Bonfiglioli, and its 39 neighbourhoods.
Paula Gentile, director of the School of Fine Arts, noted that adopting a unique emblem is an important step in giving the city a unifying symbol.
The chosen design features three vertical stripes of equal width. The left stripe is light blue, symbolizing the Ctalamochita River, which sustains the city as it flows from northwest to southeast. The right stripe is green, representing the countryside, development, and hope for the growing community.
In the centre, a white stripe conveys balance and peace, bearing a golden sun inspired by Bonfiglioli’s artwork on the cathedral ceiling. The sun includes 39 rays, each representing one of Villa María’s neighbourhoods.
