AUGUST 22, 2025 — Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has by Proclamation declared Sunday, August 24, 2025, as National Flag Day.
In accordance with tradition, the official observance will be marked with a public holiday on Monday, August 25, 2025, when all government offices, schools, and businesses will remain closed.
According to the Liberian Foreign Ministry, the Proclamation calls on all Liberians and foreign residents to commemorate National Flag Day by proudly displaying the national flag on homes and public buildings.
National Flag Day is rooted in an Act of the Legislature, approved on October 25, 1915, declaring August 24 each year as the day set aside to honour Liberia’s National Ensign, a symbol of the nation’s sovereignty, independence, and unity.
This year’s commemoration will be held under the theme: “The Flag We Raise, The Values We Uphold.” The Ministry of Education will coordinate activities in partnership with the Flag Day Planning Committee. The keynote address will be delivered by Councillor Jallah Barbu at the official indoor program.
Designed in 1847 by a committee of women led by Susannah Lewis, the Liberian Flag features eleven alternating red and white stripes representing the signers of the Declaration of Independence, along with a single white star on a blue field symbolizing Liberia’s distinction as Africa’s first independent republic, says Liberian news outlet Front Page Africa.
