Liberia Marks 178th Flag Day with Parades and Celebrations

AUGUST 26, 2025 — Liberia commemorated its 178th National Flag Day yesterday with colourful school parades, competitions, and patriotic reflections in the city of Monrovia, Front Page Africa reports.

The event honoured the historic moment in 1847 when the Liberian flag, designed by seven women led by Susanna Lewis, was first raised as a symbol of the newly independent African republic.

Keynote speaker Dr. Jallah A. Barbu, chairman of the War and Economic Crimes Court, used the occasion to reflect on the meaning of national symbols and justice.

Though the event carried its usual patriotic energy, it was overshadowed by the conspicuous absence of Liberia’s top leadership. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, House Speaker Richard Koon, Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, and newly appointed Chief Justice Yamie Gbeisay were not present.

With no official statement yet from the Executive Mansion, Attorney General and Justice Minister N. Oswald Tweh represented the President at the ceremony.

In remarks delivered on Boakai’s behalf, Tweh said that “Liberia was once a shining star in Africa, but political instability caused serious setbacks. As we celebrate the 178th anniversary of the Lone Star, we must rebuild our national fabric and move forward as one indivisible people.”
