SEPTEMBER 6, 2025 — Cumbria has unveiled its first official community flag chosen through a county-wide competition and public vote, reports the BBC.
The winning design, created by Ben Walker, features a vivid gold crown on a blue field, positioned above a yellow and green zig-zag pattern. The crown honours Cumbria’s historical status as a kingdom, while the zig-zag references the region’s rugged landscapes.
The flag was formally presented and blessed in a ceremony at Carlisle Cathedral, with the Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Alexander Scott, presiding over the event.
The flag was selected from hundreds of entries, narrowed down to six finalists by a local judging panel and then decided by public vote.
According to Philip Tibbetts of the UK’s Flag Institute, the design excels both in meaningful symbolism and in meeting technical standards for flag design.
