NOVEMBER 4, 2025 — The United Arab Emirates observed Flag Day on November 3 with widespread flag-raising ceremonies and displays of red, green, white, and black throughout the country, says the Khaleej Times.
Residents, businesses, schools, and government buildings participated in the synchronized hoisting of the national flag at 11am, an annual ritual intended to promote a sense of shared identity and continuity.
Flag Day originated in 2013, established by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, in connection with the anniversary of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s accession in 2004.
According to Dubai Eye 103.8, an official ceremony was led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the Dubai International Financial Centre, featuring a large mural of the country’s founding rulers and the participation of school children. In his public remarks, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the flag’s symbolism of “pride, dignity and progress,” and called on citizens to demonstrate belonging through positive conduct and achievement.
Simultaneously, authorities underscored strict laws governing treatment of the flag, says the Daily Times. Residents and businesses were reminded that any perceived disrespect toward the national flag, including using it on cakes, advertisements, balloons, food, or clothing, could lead to criminal prosecution. Sanctions for such offences include prison terms of up to 25 years and fines reaching Dh500,000.
Guidelines stipulate that the flag must never touch the ground, must be constructed of approved materials, and must not bear added embellishments. These measures are routinely credited by officials as efforts to protect the dignity of the national symbol and ensure a particular standard of observance during public celebrations.
