Luxembourg: New Grand Duke Marks Birthday With Debut of Army’s Flag

NOVEMBER 11, 2025 — Luxembourg’s national army has adopted a new flag, a ceremonial gesture occurring on the 44th birthday of Grand Duke Guillaume and his first St Martin’s Day as Head of the Army, says RTL Today.

This event was hosted today at the Härebierg military base, and follows Grand Duke Guillaume’s accession on October 3rd.

The new standard for Luxembourg’s armed forces intertwines two significant symbols: one side displays the freshly designed monogram of Grand Duke Guillaume, while the other features the historic Red Lion emblem.

According to the Grand Ducal Court, the monogram was devised by graphic designer Yolande Kaiser and consists of two mirrored ‘G’ letters topped with a redesigned crown, reflecting the official insignia of the Court.

The designer worked closely with Grand Duke Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie to integrate both practical uniform requirements and the prince’s wish for a readily identifiable ‘G’. Elements of calligraphic curves and geometric harmony, constructed on the principles of the golden ratio, were fundamental to the final design. “Prince Guillaume opted for a G style inspired by italic handwriting,” Kaiser noted, emphasizing that recognisability was paramount.

The ceremony itself was conducted in a subdued atmosphere marked by reflections on current global challenges.

Chaplain Nicolas Wenner branded the Grand Duke as “a symbol of the unity and independence of our homeland” and cautioned, “We are not at war, but we are no longer at peace […] Perhaps in the future, we will have to protect what was never so endangered before: our democracy and our freedom.”
