England: Telford and Wrekin Unveils Winning Flag

NOVEMBER 13, 2025 — A new flag for Telford and Wrekin has been chosen through a council-backed contest that invited residents to shape the borough’s first official flag, says the Shropshire Star.

The winning design, crafted by nine-year-old Amelia from Randlay Primary School, was selected after a two-week online poll in which more than 4,000 votes were cast, reflecting broad local engagement ahead of Telford Day on November 29.

Amelia’s flag features the Ironbridge as a central motif, complemented by a cog to nod to the area’s industrial heritage and a green field to symbolize the borough’s parks and open spaces.

The design stood out among four finalists who collaborated with a professional designer to refine their drawings according to guidelines from the Flag Institute.

Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, congratulated Amelia, noting that the flag’s combination of iconic landmark, industrial symbolism, and verdant themes captures a sense of place that residents can rally around for years to come.

“Amelia should be really proud of what she has achieved in creating a flag to represent our borough,” he said, adding gratitude to the other finalists, Mhairi, Valarie, and Dexie, for their contributions.

The winning flag will be raised at Southwater Square during the Telford Day celebrations later this month.

Amelia’s school will receive a £250 prize to support arts and crafts resources.
