Coalhurst, Alberta, Unveils New Flag as Part of Rebranding Effort

DECEMBER 6, 2025 — In Canada, the Town of Coalhurst, Alberta, marked its ongoing thirtieth-anniversary celebrations with the official raising of a new flag, according to the Lethbridge Herald, coinciding with a comprehensive rebranding initiative that launched in the summer.

The flag-raising ceremony, held on Tuesday, provided students from Coalhurst Elementary School with a hands-on learning experience about local government.

As nearly forty fifth and sixth graders prepared for a mock council meeting to debate a motion on building a new skate park, they witnessed the formal debut of the new civic standard.

The new flag is a prominent piece of the town’s visual overhaul, which is described as a reflection of “who Coalhurst is today and the kind of future we’re building together,” according to the City website.

The flag’s field is a rich, deep hue referred to in the new palette as “Coalhurst Purple,” a tone replacing the town’s formerly brighter shade to suggest a more “grounded” and “bold” character representing perseverance and pride.

At the centre of the banner appears the new circular municipal crest, which incorporates elements tied to the community’s history and motto.

A key feature of the crest is a stylised diamond, which is directly linked to the town’s Latin motto, Pressura gemmas facit, meaning “Pressure makes diamonds.” This symbol is intended to honour the town’s past as a coal-mining community and suggest that strength and lasting quality can emerge from difficult challenges. Radiating outward from the diamond are “sunbeams,” which the town states symbolize optimism, energy, and a focus on the future.

The design inspiration for the overall branding takes cues from the structured, classic aesthetic of the 1930s, a decade significant to the town’s history, including the 1935 mining disaster.

The updated colour scheme retains the municipality’s traditional purple and gold, with the yellow now rendered as a “Coalhurst Gold” to convey warmth and optimism.
