Ohio: Loveland Selects ‘Heart Land’ Design for Sesquicentennial Flag

DECEMBER 6, 2025 — The City of Loveland, Ohio, has concluded a public art competition to select a new flag, marking the city’s 150th anniversary in 2026. After a Call for Art issued earlier this year, the Loveland Sesquicentennial Committee chose a design titled “The Heart Land” by local artist Arianna Wilson, says a press release by the city government.

The initiative sought to replace the city’s flag, which has been in use since 1974, with a new symbol intended to fly for at least the next decade. The flag currently in service was created by retired Air Force captain and vexillologist Howard A. Miller. It features a diagonal tricolour, representing the three counties (Clermont, Hamilton, and Warren) where Loveland is situated, with a central red heart inscribed with the city’s founding year of 1796 and topped with an Ohio buckeye leaf.

The Sesquicentennial Committee, which led the redesign process, encouraged Loveland residents and workers aged 18 or older to submit up to three original designs. The committee reported receiving 68 submissions in response to the call. The contest offered a $1,000 honorarium to the winner.

Arianna Wilson, the selected artist, stated that her inspiration for “The Heart Land” came from local nature, citing the “scenic views along the Loveland Bike Trail and the Little Miami Scenic River.” She further noted that with the design, “it is clear we put our heart into preserving the history and beauty of our land.”

The winning flag is slated to be officially unveiled as part of the sesquicentennial celebration and will subsequently be displayed at city buildings and parks.
