DECEMBER 8, 2025 — The Department of General López in Santa Fe province, Argentina, officially unveiled its new flag on Friday, reports Sur24.
The initiative to create a departmental flag began with a competition launched on August 11. The goal was to establish an emblem that would integrate the department’s constituent towns and reflect the region’s cultural, productive, and territorial identity, unifying traditions, history, and art with a focus on the future. The competition was open to institutions, work groups, and individuals.
The winning design was created by Hernán Guardia of Venado Tuerto and was selected from 36 submissions. The insignia is intended to synthesize the history, production, and culture of southern Santa Fe.
Key features of the design include a sun with 31 points, a number likely corresponding to the region’s municipalities, and elements symbolizing industrial production, nature, and the colour green, which is present in the flags of many local towns. One of the most geographically specific aspects is a white diagonal stripe meant to represent the distinctive shape of General López on a map.
The flag’s creator, Hernán Guardia, stated that the design’s true significance comes from its communal ownership: “This design is no longer yours, now it belongs to the whole community.”
The new flag is intended for use in institutional representations, public acts, and celebrations.
