Argentina: La Merced Adopts New Official Flag

DECEMBER 13, 2025 — The municipality of La Merced, located in Salta Province, Argentina, has officially adopted a new flag following a public design competition, reports El Tribuno.

The inaugural ceremony for the flag, which has been declared a part of the municipality’s cultural heritage, took place in the General San Martín plaza. The winning design was submitted by Vivian Emilia Guaymás Zenteno, a young resident of La Merced.

The presentation, blessing, and first raising of the flag drew a large crowd, including Mayor Javier Wayar, Senator Gonzalo Caro, Deputy Carlos Jorge, and President of the Deliberative Council Mauro Villegas, alongside other officials and council members.

On the flag, the blue colour is said to represent the sky, hope, liberty, and national unity. Green reflects the municipality’s fertile land and natural resources. White is described as a tribute to the labour of the local population and, specifically, to lime, a resource that historically shaped La Merced’s economic development. Yellow symbolizes the warm climate and the “closeness” of its people.

At the centre of the field, a radiant sun is displayed, intended to symbolize the “birth of a new city.” Within the central design are two key elements: a lime kiln, which is included to evoke the local productive memory and history, and a rose shown emerging from the kiln, symbolizing the “flowering beauty of a town that grows without losing its roots.”
