Illinois Village of Elburn Unveils First Official Flag

DECEMBER 13, 2025 — The village of Elburn, Illinois, has officially adopted its first flag, which was publicly displayed for the first time on December 6, during the annual Elburn Christmas Stroll, says a news release on the Kane County website.

The initiative to establish a village flag was spearheaded by Village Trustee Chris Hansen, who sought to honour the late former Trustee Bill Grabarek.

Grabarek had reportedly championed the idea of an official village symbol for many years, even having a custom flag created for his own funeral, according to an earlier press release.

The winning design was created by resident Dan Krall, following a community-wide contest that solicited original designs reflecting Elburn’s character. The competition drew a strong response from the public, receiving a total of 60 submissions, 28 of which came from children.

Submissions were required to be simple, meaningful, and to incorporate the official Elburn “E” symbol. The contest ran until the submission deadline of Labor Day, September 1.

Trustee Hansen expressed gratitude to those who participated, stating, “Huge thanks to all community members for helping create a piece of Elburn history, and to the Elburn staff for handling the contest and everything associated with the process.”

The official raising ceremony for the new flag is anticipated for spring 2026. This date is scheduled to coincide with the planned completion of the expansion projects for the Elburn Village Hall and Police Department.

Once those construction projects are finished, the flag is intended to be flown permanently at the Village Hall, as well as at all other Elburn government buildings.
