JANUARY 1, 2026 — Andrej Babiš, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, announced in his New Year’s address his intention to elevate the sense of national pride among Czech citizens, proposing that March 30 be recognized as Day of the Czech Flag, according to CNN Prima News.
The proposal is explained by the historical significance of the date, as it was the day the Czechoslovak flag was introduced in 1920.
The Prime Minister framed this initiative as part of a wider push for citizens to openly express their national identity, encouraging people to display the Czech flag from windows or wear it on clothing, not just during sporting events.
“We want 2026 to be a year of pride,” Babiš stated in his address. “Let’s not be afraid to show that we care about our country. Even by putting the Czech flag on our jacket lapel or hanging it from the window, not only during sports matches. We have always been a skilled and hardworking nation.”
Babiš further indicated that his government is committed to uniting a divided society, particularly on matters of national pride and patriotism.
Regarding the overall direction for the year, Babiš stated, “2026 will be a year of the hardest work for us. We will rush mainly to the most important law of the year,” while committing to state operational savings and aiming for growth in real wages and pensions.
