Lithuania: Voveriai Unveils New Flag

JANUARY 1, 2026 — The village of Voveriai in Lithuania has officially adopted a completely new set of civic symbols, including a coat of arms, a representative flag, a field flag, and a seal, according to a Facebook post by the Lithuanian Heraldry Commission.

The entire suite of designs was created by artist Giedrė Bernotavičienė.

The central component of this new identity is the coat of arms, which falls into the category of “canting arms.” This heraldic device visually represents the name of the locality, as the Lithuanian word for squirrel, voverė, is the direct inspiration for the village name, Voveriai.

Beyond this linguistic link, the inclusion of the animal is also intended to symbolize the historical or current abundance of squirrels in the area.

The heraldic description specifies the design of the shield as a gold squirrel holding a silver acorn, set against a blue field. The flag features the same shield on a white field.
