JANUARY 19, 2026 — The City of Rock Springs in Wyoming is moving toward the formal adoption of a new official flag, SweetwaterNOW reports.
According to the proposed resolution to be discussed this Tuesday, the local governing body asserts that a dedicated municipal flag serves as a visual representation of the community’s history, values, and civic identity, while also providing a consistent symbol for official use at city facilities and public events.
If passed, the resolution will designate the new design as the sole official flag of Rock Springs and effectively retire any previous designs from official status.
The proposed design is the result of a youth-oriented competition held last year, which was won by local high school student Brandon Swigart.
The flag features a horizontal tricolour appearance with yellow and green bands. A prominent blue trapezoidal shape on the hoist side contains two distinct yellow stars, one with five points and another with six points, which Swigart noted are intended to represent the 56 different nationalities that comprise the heritage of Rock Springs. The colours of yellow, blue and green are derived from the city’s modern corporate logo.
Furthermore, the design includes a geographic tribute; when rotated vertically, the blue section is intended to evoke the silhouette of Pilot Butte, a local landmark.
Mayor Max Mickelson, who personally awarded a $250 prize to the designer, expressed a strong preference for the winning entry during the evaluation phase.
“I was desperately hoping this would become the winning design because it was my favorite,” Mickelson stated, noting that a dedicated flag committee reviewed various submissions before selecting the current proposal.
If the resolution is approved, the City Clerk will be tasked with maintaining the official specifications to ensure the design is reproduced consistently across all civic contexts.
