Mississippi: Flowood Adopts First Flag Designed by Student

MAY 22, 2026 — The city of Flowood, Mississippi, officially adopted its first municipal flag on May 18, during a Board of Aldermen meeting at City Hall, reports WLBT3.

The decision establishes an official banner for the city for the first time since its incorporation in 1989.

The flag was selected through a student design competition initiated earlier this year by Mayor Kathy Smith, which drew 42 entries from youth attending local schools. The municipal government selected a submission by Rodgers Brown, a tenth-grade student at Northwest Rankin High School, who was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the city.

Additionally, local business Pacesetter Gallery provided a $200 art supply donation to Brown’s art teacher, Mandy Brownlee.

Reflecting on the selection, Brown stated, “This is really important to me because I get to express my perception of Flowood through this design. My design is basically how I wanted Flowood to be represented through their flag.”

According to promotional materials released by municipal and tourism officials, the flag features a central dogwood flower intended to reference the local “Dogwood” Four Corners retail district, alongside various coloured elements.

A Facebook post by the City explains that the green field signifies growth, the blue represents local bodies of water like the Pearl River and Ross Barnett Reservoir, the white denotes renewal, and a gold line represents Lakeland Drive, a prominent local roadway corridor.
