JUNE 8, 2026 — The city of New Albany, Mississippi, is evaluating a potential new design for its official flag following a proposal from the local community development office, reports the New Albany Gazette.
The city council has not yet taken any action on the submission, which seeks to replace a decades-old emblem that has represented the city since around its sesquicentennial celebration.
The current flag features an illustration of a Native American figure, widely identified as Chickasaw Chief Ish-te-ho-to-pah, created by local artist Kathrine Dye.
Officials stated that the proposed alternative is intended to represent “moving forward rather than looking back.” According to the community development office, the new design features an arch meant to symbolize unity and a local bridge, alongside a series of waves representing the Tallahatchie River, which proponents described as “our foundation and looking to the horizon.”
The proposed flag also integrates the colour palette utilized in the current Mississippi state flag.
