JUNE 27, 2026 — A legislative proposal in Montevideo seeks to establish the first official flag for the capital city of Uruguay, reports Montevideo Portal, timing the initiative with the city’s ongoing tricentennial celebrations.
The motion requests that the municipal administration organize an open public competition to design a flag.
Currently, Montevideo remains one of only two jurisdictions out of the nineteen departments in Uruguay that does not possess its own regional flag, an administrative absence that proponents note is unusual given the city’s status as the country’s primary political, cultural, and population centre.
The initiative is framed around commemorations marking the 300-year anniversary of the city’s foundational process.
Under the proposed framework, the design contest would be open to Uruguayan citizens living in the capital.
The sponsoring legislators stated that the future emblem should be “a lasting symbol of quality, understood as an accessory but significant element that distinguishes the city and strengthens its local recognition within its scope, but also nationally and internationally.”
The proposal must now undergo review by the Departmental Board before any official recommendation can be sent to the municipal executive for potential implementation.
